AdeleAdkins was raised by a single mother in various areas of working class London. As a young girl she was a fan of contemporary pop songs and also learning to play guitar and the clarinet. However, it wasn't until her early teens, after she came across rhythm-and-blues singer Etta James and other mid-20th-century performers that she began to consider pursuing a career in music. As she worked on her skills in a state-funded secondary school for performing arts, a friend started posting songs Adkins composed and recorded onto the social media site Myspace. Following her graduation, Adkins' music caught the attention of record labels. She signed a contract in 2006 with XL Recordings.
